Part II - R&A to change the date of the British Open
April 1st, 2007
"Look, Tiger's done amazing things for the PGA Tour and for golf around the
world," Phil Mickelson said. "But to change the date of the Open? That's
going way too far. Really, it's off the charts."
Still, the R&A simply wants to do whatever it can so that the world's number
one golfer will play.
"We are continuing to study the ramifications of moving the Open," Dawson
said. "This is the last thing we wanted to do. But we know that the Open's
millions of followers around the world, and those who have already purchased
tickets for the Open and made their plans for Carnoustie, expect Tiger to
play."
Discussions on the possible date change are ongoing. Dawson and Hill will
meet again with Finchem and O'Grady, and other key officials in golf, during
the Masters. Dawson said a decision will follow soon after the Masters.
Finally, Dawson made a statement that reveals without ambiguity how
seriously the R&A is taking the issue of Woods' possible absence.
"Only a fool would think we should not examine every possible means of
ensuring that Tiger will play," Dawson said.
